'Why do we go on like this--being unhappy?'

'It's a mistake to mix up the ideas of happiness and love,' Scobie said with a desperate pedantry, as though, if he could trn the whole situation into a textbook case, as they had turned Pemberton, peace might return to both of them, a kind of resignation.

we talked last night. after a huge, blown up argument, we finally talked. with my head in my hands, unable to stop my tears, i told him everything. i told him everything that i have been scared of for years, that has hurt me in the past, that i am worried about for our future.

we are taking it slow. we are together. we will see in december. if it comes down to it, around then would be the easiest time to find another place to live.

i am hurt, and i am hopeful. i don't know how it will go. but i want to understand, more than anything.
